Description

Quantum ESPRESSO is an integrated suite of computer codes for electronic-structure calculations and materials modeling at the nanoscale. It is based on density-functional theory, plane waves, and pseudopotentials (both norm-conserving and ultrasoft).

SLURM Jobscript for Using the QuantumESPRESSO Module Built with EasyBuild

The following is an example SLURM jobscript for using the QuantumESPRESSO module built by EasyBuild (see the table above). The AUSURF112 benchmark is used for demonstration.

Please note that this example may not guarantee the best computation performance, because the computation performance of QuantumESPRESSO depends on many factors, e.g. the version of QuantumESPRESSO, the compilers, the MPI library and involved math libraries, as well as the configuration for parallelization.

Build Instructions for Customized QuantumESPRESSO

If the above versions of QuantumESPRESSO built with EasyBuild cannot fulfill your calculation, please contact us via pc2-support@uni-paderborn.de. We would like to help you for a customized build.

If you really want to build customized QuantumESPRESSO by yourself, the following are the instructions with detailed steps.

  1. Navigate to the directory, where you want to build QuantumESPRESSO, e.g. $PC2PFS/YOUR_PROJECT/QE. Please replace YOUR_PROJECT with the name of your project.
  2. Load the modules for building the customized QuantumESPRESSO. In the example below Intel toolchain (compilers, MPI and math libraries etc) and CMake are used. In addition the libxc library is enabled as addon in this build.
  3. Download your required version (or your customized version) of QuantumESPRESSO. In this example we use QuantumESPRESSO 7.0 (the latest version when writing this document).
  4. Configure the build of QuantumESPRESSO and install it in your preferred directory, e.g. $PC2PFS/YOUR_PROJECT/QE/QE_root, where YOUR_PROJECT is the name of your project.

An example SLURM jobscript is given below that performs the aforementioned steps to build QuantumESPRESSO 7.0 with libxc on Noctua. Please replace YOUR_PROJECT with the name of your project.

After the above build of QuantumESPRESSO finishes successfully, the following SLURM jobscript can be used as an example to test the AUSURF112 benchmark. The parallelization is described as comments in the jobscript. Please replace YOUR_PROJECT with the name of your project on Noctua.

Performance of QuantumESPRESSO 7.0 for the AUSURF112 Benchmark

The performance of QuantumESPRESSO 7.0 is measured for the AUSURF112 benchmark on a single compute node of Noctua 2 (128 CPU-cores). The configurations for parallelization and the elapsed walltime (the smaller the better) are listed in the table below. The best one is highlighted with green background.
