Usage Hints for LS-DYNA

Usage of LS-DYNA requires a valid license.

An example job script can be found below:

#!/bin/bash
#SBATCH -t TIMELIMIT
#SBATCH -J JOBNAME
#SBATCH --ntasks=NUMBER_OF_MPI_RANKS
#SBATCH --cpus-per-task=NUMBER_OF_THREADS
#SBATCH --mem-per-cpu=MEMORY_PER_CORE

#load license information
source LICENSEFILE

export OMP_NUM_THREADS=NUMBER_OF_THREADS

#load version of LS-DYNA
module reset
module load cae/LS-DYNA/VERSION

srun ls-dyna i=$1 ncpu=NUMBER_OF_THREADS

You will need to replace or modify:

  • TIMELIMIT, e.g. 2:00:00 for 2 hours

  • JOBNAME, i.e. the name of the simulation

  • For NUMBER_OF_CPU_CORES, MEMORY_PER_CORE, NUMBER_OF_THREADS:

Slurm Option

mpi-Version

smp-version

NUMBER_OF_MPI_RANKS

--ntasks

number of CPU-cores for the calculation

1

MEMORY_PER_CORE

--mem-per-cpu

memory per CPU-Core, e.g. 2G for 2 GB per CPU-Core

memory per CPU-core, e.g. 2G for 2 GB per CPU-Core
The whole job will use (memory per CPU-core)*(number of CPU-cores).

NUMBER_OF_THREADS

--cpus-per-task

1

the number of CPU-cores for the calculation

  • LICENSEFILE this file should contain the license information, e.g.

    • export LSTC_LICENSE="network"
      export LSTC_LICENSE_SERVER="..."
      export MATFEMD_LICENSE_FILE="..."

    • We recommend putting it in the group directory in permanent storage, e.g. $PC2DATA/hpc-prf-.../LS-DYNA.license

  • VERSION can be one of the listed above, e.g 12.1.0-mpi-double-avx512. Since the CPUs in Noctua 1 support the AVX512 instruction set extension it is worth trying it compared to the AVX2-version. Your calculation might be faster.

You can then simply use this job script as sbatch jobscipt.sh INPUTFILE.

Please note that the above versions use Intel MPI on Noctua 1 for better compatibility with the Intel Omnipath interconnect and Intel Xeon Skylake-SP CPUs.

If you need support in using this software, additional version, or other example job scripts please contact pc2-support@uni-paderborn.de.
